Carly Rae Jepsen – This Kiss

After spending pretty much all summer at number one, Call Me Maybe is officially THE biggest song of 2012. The song’s success is without a doubt a huge achievement for Carly Rae Jepsen, who went from being an unsigned Canadian Idol reject, to instant pop culture phenomenon. However, one hit can only take you so far. Moving forward with the release of her sophomore album, Carly Rae is poised for yet another hit with This Kiss.

With its bright and cheery 80’s inspired synth beat, the song quickly re-captures the pure pop bliss of Call Me Maybe. With a jaunty beat, the song simply begs to be played on a dance floor lit by disco balls and neon lights. Carly may not have the strongest voice, but her soft tone shines through beautifully as she plays the role of the flirty daydreamer. Carly seems to have a knack for writing catchy choruses that capture pure joy, and This Kiss is no different. You’ll be singing “This kiss, is something I can’t resist” all day long!
Although she may have ditched the singer song-writer vibe in favor of a few synth beats, Carly definitely isn’t trying to be the typical pop star with this hit. She isn’t looking to turn heads with outrageous costumes, edgy lyrics, or techno beats. The girl next door we all met on Canadian Idol is still here, and is finding out who she is not just as an artist, but as a household name. The transition into the pop mainstream can be hard, but it is smooth sailing for Carly Rae Jepsen and the pure pop bliss of This Kiss.
Final Score: 3/5
