2014 top songs

Kendrick Lamar – i

Kendrick Lamar i

Hip-Hop music is always best when the artist has a meaningful message to relay. Kendrick is known for his forward thinking and imaginative lyrics, and i takes that notion to a completely different level. Over an upbeat groove, sampled from the classic soul song That Lady, Kendrick delivers pointed lyrics with an upbeat flow and a positive message. The song’s energy bursts through the hook of “I love myself,” providing a more positive view of life in the ghetto. Kendrick Lamar has everything that the hip-hop game needs today; creativity, talent, wit, and an alternative viewpoint. Its these qualities that has solidified his music as one of the best in the game.

Ariana Grande – Problem (featuring Iggy Azaelia)

Ariana Grande 2014

Well, if this wasn’t the definitive song of 2014’s summer, I don’t know what was. Even after winter came, this song just doesn’t seem to quit! It was the song that launched Ariana Grande into super stardom, and laid the ground work for Iggy to come up hot on her heels. With its retro vibe, upbeat groove, and catchy saxophone loops, this song was made for pop dominance! Add an unforgettable hook, killer vocals, and crisp rapping, and the deal is done. This song isn’t going anywhere for awhile.

Idina Menzel – Let It Go
(December 2013)

Let It Go 2014

I grew up during the time that is now considered “The Disney Renaissance.” Back then, Disney songs like A Whole New World and Colors of the Wind were a part of everyday radio playlists, but for the past fifteen years or so, Disney just hasn’t managed to recreate that magic. However, Frozen effectively changed all of that and made “Disney Songs” relevant again! With an empowering message, brilliant instrumentals, and a masterclass vocalist, Let It Go‘s power could not be denied!

Ready everyone? 1, 2, 3…Let it go! LET IT GoooOOOOOOOO!!!

Ed Sheeran – Don’t

Ed Sheeran Don't 2014

This is why you don’t want to piss off Ed Sheeran. He will write a song about you, it will be a hit, and everyone will know what a manipulative two-timer you are, Ellie Goulding! In this jaunty little number, Ed gets gritty and personal as he spits out some half-sung-half-rapped lyrics that recount his relationship with the electro-pop diva, exposing everything from how they met, to how she cheated on him with one of his mates! Along with the tabloid lyrics, Ed Throws in a catchy riff, a powerful chorus, and an unrelenting groove. Its a well crafted pop masterpiece that proves Ed’s knack for songwriting.

Sia – Chandelier

Sia Chandelier 2014

Few artists can blur the lines between pop music and artistic expression the way that Sia has with this song. In every way, shape, and form, this song is a true masterpiece. Her lyrics might seem like the same vapid and shallow pop drivel at first, but a deeper listen will reveal a truly powerful and stirring meaning about Sia’s own history of depression and substance abuse. Her vocal delivery is a true master class. With emotion and conviction, she manages to launch her voice straight into the stratosphere with relative ease (even live!). However, the song truly breaks boundaries by featuring Maddie Zeigler’s exquisite choreography. It’s a sell binding performance on every level, and proves that pop music truly is an artform.
