What happens when you don’t call her maybe? Carly Rae Jepsen will pout for awhile, before grabbing the nearest techno beat and dance under some flashing lights before turning around with a “screw you!”
Carly Rae Jepsen is likely to never again repeat the colossal success of Call Me Maybe. Then again, neither are most other pop stars. Seriously, that song was massive. With the flop of her last single, This Kiss, the Canadian songstress is trying hard move out of the shadow of that one hit. Her latest single is the bolder, edgier, and much clubbier Tonight I’m Getting Over You.
This club ready breakup antheym is definitely tailor made for 2013, with a heavy dose of electro-pop and sassy lyrics. The verses simmer with Jepsen bemoaning a relationship that “isn’t lovers, but more than friends.” Its in the chorus that the four-to-the-floor dance beat is unleashed as she vows to “keep dancing to the morning with somebody new.”
The beat elevates the song to a state of euphoria. Its super easy to dance to, and it comes in well paced doses that never really overwhelm the song in ways that Minaj and Rihanna have become prone to. Its just the right amount of club bang, coated in sugary pop goodness to make this song stick on radio stations and club playlists.
Will it ever surpass “that other song?” Probably not. But this is the rightful follow up to Good Time, and is sure to extend Jepsen’s shelf life until album number two.
Final Score: 3/5
