The Dropkick Murphy’s are done ruining Christmas, and are looking to have a little bit of fun with the third single off of their most recent album. The Boys Are Back is definitely the right way to start a new year for the band. After delving into more narrative songwriting in their last album, this song comes as a return to form for the band. With so little time between albums, you can almost imagine the group sitting down to a round as they talk about their next album, slamming down their drinks and saying “Fuck it!” before entering the studio and just jamming out in typical belligerent Celtic-punk fashion.
The resulting album is definitely more fun and catchy than anything from the last album, with The Boys are Back being one of the album’s highlights. Sticking to the style that we’ve come to expect from the band, they’ve seamlessly blended traditional Celtic elements with thrashing punk sounds.
Its a formula that works, as the bagpipes provide a melodic contrast to the gritty guitars and pounding drums. The half-sung-half-chanted-but-mostly-shouted chorus will have you raising a glass and chanting along. This song is best played at loud volumes at some dive bar called Paddy O’Bingedrink’s. While this song isn’t breaking any new ground for the band, it is a tried and true style that proves the saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Final Score: 3/5
