Parade – Louder

Everyone loves a good girl group. Recently, in the UK, a new group has thrown their hat into the ring with the likes of The Saturdays, Girls Aloud, and the shadow of what used to be The Sugababes. Emily, Lauren, Bianca, Jessica and Sian are collectively known as Parade, and they debuted last month with their first single, an upbeat pop song called “Louder.” So, does their debut warrant any attention? Here’s the breakdown of Parade’s “Louder.”

The Good;

  • It has a really fun and bubbly pop sound. It’s kind of a nice distraction from the electric bass that’s in every single pop song today.
  • This song relies on its catchy chorus, which will easily get stuck in your head. Catchy level is a definite 10 out of 10.
  • The blond has a great voice, and clearly stands out as the best vocalist.
  • This group shares the spotlight pretty diplomatically. It’s nice that there isn’t any one single girl that stands in the middle all the time.

The Bad;

  • The lyrics could have been better. This song doesn’t really seem to be about anything in particular, except the desire for more decibels. Is it really that hard to turn the dial to warrant an entire song?
  • They aren’t the best singers, or the best dancers, but they’re passably good in both areas. As far as British groups go, they’re great, but I’ve seen much better coming from Asia.
  • I hate when girl groups neglect one or more of the members. In this song, the cute auburn doesn’t get any solo lines.

The Verdict; 3/5
Well…maybe not good, but not bad either. I can’t help but feel like I’m being a bit soft on Parade, but “Louder” is a fun song. None of these girls seem like they can make it as a solo artist, so there is a certain collective unity that’s nice to see. They each bring their individual charms and talents, and when put together, something fun and surprisingly cool happens when we should have had a disaster. They have potential. I’m not turning it up louder, but I’m not turning it off either.
